We’ll Build Anything You Can Imagine

I’m Michael Workman, born in the srping of 1970 in Toronto, I moved to Winnipeg with my family in 1974 into a late 1960s bungalow in Windsor Park. I grew up like most kids in my neighborhood, with 2 working parents and a house key in my pocket to get into the house at lunch and after school, the proverbial latch key kid.

The year of my grade 8 summer, 1984, my godparents Steve and Joan Zdradkovic came to visit from Toronto. My uncle Steve, being a journeyman electrician jack of all trades, was coerced into renovating our basement while on vacation. He enlisted my help with the tear out of was then called “chipboard” wood paneling on the walls, which today we know as OSB. After also tearing down the ceiling, I began to assist him with the rebuild from the studs out. Being the 80s, the walls were now going to be covered with faux pine wood paneling with matching trim to cover the seams and quarter round for the corners. The ceiling now boasted 4 foot by 4 foot white ceiling tiles. It was from this moment, as a 14 year old about to enter high school that I began my passionate journey as a contractor.

We’re The Home Renovation Experts

My contractor education was put on hold however as I attended St. Paul’s High School where there were no opportunities for anyone interested in woodworking or anything else “shops” related. After graduation in June 1988, I took some time to discover what the world had to offer outside the very constricting and restrictive walls of the classroom. I traveled to Australia to visit family and spent a year on a Nissan assembly line building cars while being immersed in all that is Aussie culture.

Arriving back in Winnipeg 1990, I worked at Eaton’s while attending what was then Red River Community College and obtained my Architectural Drafting Certificate in June of 1992. An opportunity to move out of my family home arose in December that year with my best friend Dave Beeusaert with one caveat: We had to renovate the basement apartment in the 5 plex that we were to move in to. Three weeks of tear out and rebuild from studs to paint and we were ready to move in before new years eve. Again, I felt most at home when swinging a hammer and recreating a space.

Not having any success breaking into the drafting world, I enrolled at the University of Winnipeg in the faculty of arts in September 1993. It was in the spring of 1994 while looking for a job for the summer that I answered an ad for “carpenters helper” posted at the student employment job center. For the next 9 summers, from 1994 to August 2002 I was employed by GLP Enterprises building fences and decks all over the city. This was the time where I honed my carpentry skills and realized that I possessed a natural aptitude for all types of contractor work. Not unlike my uncle Steve I became a jack of all trades, with skills mostly suited to carpentry. However, not wanting to waste my university education, and after obtaining a bachelor of education in 2002 (on top of my bachelor of arts), I taught various levels of grade and secondary school, spending most of my 13 year teaching career in Jr. High. Teaching from 2002 to 2015 also permitted me to work as a contractor over the summer. The decision to halt my teaching career and get back on the tools (as the Aussies say), was one made in order to provide flexibility in my work schedule.

My wife Nicole, who teachers grade 1 half time, and I are parents to three wonderful kids, Joseph 12, Greta 10, and our little surprise Caleb 7. Being the sole proprietor of my own business allows me to have both a very full work and family life.

With a simple mission:

Re-envision, Re-create, Re-lax

Every year since that summer of 1984, when the contractor fire was lit in me by my tradesman godfather, I have learned more as the years past. I grew into a now 51 year old contractor who can take any sized project from plans to completion. I have the skills to redevelop the interior of all levels of a house, as well as recreate any outdoor living space to suit my client’s needs. With the last name WORKMAN, and the middle name JOSEPH, my carpentry journey was likely predestined long before I picked up a hammer over 3 decades ago and began dismantling my parent’s basement; the same basement that my mom had me renovate again in 2019. This time instead of wood paneling, she now has a completely dry walled basement with a second full bathroom and coved ceiling with flush mount dim-able pot lights.
